Tararua Mountain Race
Challenge yourself in one of the oldest mountain races in New Zealand

Gear Requirements ... note these are the MINIMUM!

There is a gear check for all competitors prior to the start and the compulsory gear list is strictly enforced.  All your gear is examined, so if you want to vacuum pack your gear you will need to do this after the gear check.

  • Windproof and waterproof jacket + over trousers (you will need more than lightweight shower/wind protection)
  • Long sleeve thermal (if you are not already wearing it)
  • Spare full length thermal top and leggings (Skins are not appropriate)
  • Thermal hat + gloves
  • Emergency blanket/bag
  • Map + Compass (GSP units are not accepted as a replacement for map + compass)
  • Whistle
  • Food and Water

The race is long and the conditions can change very quickly, so although you may think you don't need to carry this gear, ... you do!

Check out the Mountain Safety Council Trail Running Resource Here

As part of your safety gear it is required you carry a map of the course with you.  GSP units are not accepted as alternative to map and compass, but can be used as an addition, if you wish to carry one.

Gear Transport

We recognise you will need a fresh, warm dry set of gear at the end of the race so we will transport a gear bag for you from the start to finish.
